Reading Retreat
Every season, we rekindle this literary kind of fantasy we have:
It’s a getaway, somewhere quiet and uninterrupted, a weekend with nothing but time and a good book or two. Maybe some warm cookies and a nightcap, a smart conversation.
Over the course of the coming year, we’d love for you to join us for a weekend filled with good food, good books, and relaxing surroundings. From the cozy landscape of Highlands, North Carolina to the relaxing beachfront of Pawleys Island, we can’t wait for you to come along for the weekend getaway of any reader’s dreams.
Camp Buckhorn
Friday, October 16th, 2026- Sunday, October 18th, 2026

Greenville is one of the lucky few places in the country with a state park inside the city limits, 1700 acres of forests, streams, and lakes, a nature getaway so close, we can get away any time we please.
But tucked a little further back in the woods is a different piece of history. Camp Buckhorn was built by the CCC in 1937, a lodge and 10 cabins on a little lake atop the mountain. We’re so excited to host our October Reader Retreat in this nostalgic spot.
It’s a camp, y’all. Think big family style meals in the lodge, with a roaring fire in the fireplace if it’s fall enough. Quilts spread out for reading on the lawn, hikes on the private Camp Buckthorn loop through the woods. There are Adirondack chairs aplenty. Come nightfall, we’ll tell our spooky stories around the lakeside fire with some s’mores. Everyone will read a book by a local author in common, and host them for Sunday brunch.
Honestly, what sounds better than spending an old fashioned weekend in the woods with fellow readers?
No wake up calls, all quiet time.
What's Included:
Welcome cocktail, featured author’s book plus a book selected especially for you, all meals, drinks, snacks, wine and beer. Camp Buckhorn also has canoes, paddles, and life jackets for guest use.
Campers are responsible for towels and linens for their bunks, flashlights for getting to and from the bathhouse, as well as comfortable clothing for the weather. Don’t worry. We’ll send a packing list.
